Deirdre Read 48 - Freelance Makeup Artist and Beauty Therapist

Deirdre has been lucky enough to have been involved in the beauty industry for over 25 years both in New Zealand and Internationally. Also being a fine artist; interested in painting anything from canvas, nails, bodies and faces, her past journey has brought her to a solid understanding of art, skills only possessed by few make up artists and this certainly enhances the look especially when working different kind of clients. Working in Harrods & Selfridges for Clinique and Estee Lauder, then for 2 International Cosmetic Houses on their top makeup brands in the capacity as a Trainer then in Sales & Marketing. Deirdre continued to work for several Makeup Artists and Beauty Therapy Establishments when returning to Auckland from London.  Then continued as a Freelance Makeup Artist whilst being in a corporate role at Saatchi & Saatchi.

A lifestyle change out of corporate business to Wanaka with her husband and 2 small boys 12 years ago, Deirdre finally got to pursue her love of everything beauty, makeup and people, qualifying at 41 as a fully trained Beauty Therapist at the Southern Institute of Technology in Queenstown, also completing the Makeup Artistry Diploma (again as was done back in her 20's) -  with Distinction.

“I am truly passionate about making people feel relaxed, comfortable, safe and special with me. I have been told I have empathy and instant rapport with people.  Life skills, travelling and having children enables me to relate easily with people, making them feel comfortable.  I enjoy seeing people come to this region albeit for relaxing, a holiday, multi sport event, wedding or honeymoon, anything …. to help create their special memories is humbling, I often feel privileged and honoured to be part of people’s special events”.

"Deirdre created an atmosphere of calm and professionalism.  With a touch of humour in there to keep us all stress free for what was an emotionally charged time.  She came in, set up, asked pertinent and relevant questions, read the situation beautifully and carried on about her business unobtrusively, calmly and with a smile.  She was prepared out of the realm of makeup, having a sewing kit on hand, Rescue Remedy and even heel stoppers for my daughter who had forgotten hers.  A true professional.  We all felt comfortable with having an older lady with life skills and an exceptional knowledge of makeup with us on our day.  It made for us all leaving the house feeling prepared and looking gorgeous. She also gave us advice on how to cry without smudging our makeup and ensured we all had correct lip colours and powders etc for the duration of the day.  Thank you"  Jayne - Mother of Bride - July 2016 - QUEENSTOWN.

FAQ's

Whether you are planning your wedding, special occasion, or popping in for a spa treatment we understand there are always questions you want to ask. If you haven't found the answer to your question here please do not hesitate to call. We are always happy to put your mind at ease.

WEDDINGS

How should I prepare for a Wedding Makeup trial?

Just come as you are – a light moisturised face is fine. Please don’t wear any makeup. If possible, wear or bring with you lighter coloured clothes, preferably a similar tone to your wedding gown. Avoid wearing black.

Feel free to bring any pictures or photos of looks that appeal to you.

SHOULD I HAVE A TRIAL?

Having a trial is purely personal preference.  But I do thoroughly recommend them, purely for the fact that if you are indecisive or are unsure of the look you want to achieve, a trial is the perfect opportunity to work through this with both the Hairstylist and the Makeup Artist.  Sending us images or starting a Pinterest Board is a great tool to show us what you like.

When should I have a TRIAL?

Again, this is personal preference, but we find a trial is most relevant closer to the time of your event.  For example if we met you in Winter and you were having a Summer occasion, your hair may be longer/lighter/shorter.  Also skin tones, you may be tanned/paler.  We are happy to fit in when suits you but we find the 2/3 weeks prior is sufficient.
